Application Prerequisites

IMPORTANT UPDATE (8. 2023): The Radiography program at SBCC will not be accepting applications until the current waitlist is exhausted. Students on the waitlist will not be affected. Based upon the number of students on the waitlist, the application process may reopen in 2025 for the 2026 program entry. Continue to watch for updates on the changes in the application acceptance process. We wish you success in finding a program to pursue your career as a Radiologic Technologist.

Required prerequisites to be completed at the time of application. Grades of "C," or better, must be posted on submitted transcripts at the time of application.

  • Human Anatomy - BMS 107 at SBCC, or equivalent at another college.   
  • Human Physiology - BMS 108 at SBCC, or equivalent at another college. 

The following course must be completed prior to starting the Radiography program.

  • Radiography and Health Care - RT 100 must be taken at SBCC.

The following courses should be completed while on the waitlist. The program is rigorous and does not allow much time to take additional courses. They must be passed with a grade of "C," or better.

  • Medical Terminology - AH 120 or HIT 135 at SBCC, or equivalent at another college.
  • General Education (GE) Areas - It is highly recommended to complete General Education Areas before starting the program. These are graduation requirements but beneficial to the student to have  completed before starting the program. Otherwise, the student's date of taking the board exam will be delayed. They can be completed at SBCC or another college. It is the student's responsibility to submit all current transcripts so that they may evaluated for GEs.

Before entering the Radiography Program students are required to:         

  1. Complete RT 100 ā€“ Radiography and Health Care (Fall or Spring semester); grade of ā€œCā€ or better.  May be taken while on the wait list.
  2. Attend an RT Orientation meeting the semester prior to entry (date and time will be announced to the students who are scheduled to begin);
  3. Complete the SBCC physical examination on SBCC form
  4. Results from a negative TB skin test (or chest x-ray if warranted)
  5. Lab results that prove immunity to Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
  6. Lab results that prove immunity to Hepatitis B (note that the Hepatitis B vaccination is give in three doses over a period of six months)
  7. Lab results that prove immunity to varicella
  8. Submit proof of receiving the Tdap vaccination
  9. Submit results each flu season of that season's influenza vaccine
  10. Obtain a CPR card, which must be kept current throughout the program;
  11. Complete a background check (information and forms given at orientation meeting), and,
  12. Pay a one-time Radiation Film Badge fee at registration

 

It is highly recommended to complete all General Education requirements before starting the program.  The program is rigorous and does not allow much time to take additional courses.  You will not be able to graduate and sit for the board exam without completing the graduation (General Education) requirements.

The current wait list extends out to 2026.  Around 33 students are admitted each year from the existing wait list; the program begins with the school's Summer semester in June.

  • Waitlisted applicants are contacted 2 times per year (January and June) to inquire about their interest in the program
  • It is the applicant's responsibility to maintain communication with the Health Technologies Office regarding phone number and email address changes/updates
  • If no response is received in January and/or June, it is considered that the applicant is no longer interested in the RT program and will be removed from the waitlist

Any applicant who does not meet the entrance requirements may write a letter of appeal to the "Radiography Appeals Committee" stating why the applicant feels the application should be reconsidered. Send the appeal to:

The Health Technologies Counselors can assist an applicant in planning course schedules, evaluating previously taken general education courses, etc. Make an appointment through the Counseling Office, 965-0581 x4085.

  • Returning and transfer students who have been previously enrolled in the SBCC Radiography Program or another state-accredited Radiography Program may transfer into, or re-enter the SBCC Radiography Program one time only.
  • Transfer students must follow approved application procedures and meet all admission requirements. A transfer application form will be made available on request.
  • Returning students must submit a written request for re-admission to the program.
  • Re-entry students who left the program in good standing will have priority over transfer students.

Students impaired by the illnesses of alcoholism and drug abuse, or emotional illness, and who do not seek treatment, are subject to disciplinary action and may be prevented from obtaining certification.

Any SBCC Radiography student whose function is impaired by alcoholism or drug abuse will be urged to seek treatment and will be dismissed should the alcoholism or drug abuse continue.

If, at any time, the student's conduct, or physical or emotional health is such that they are a potential threat to the well-being of patients, the student will be dismissed.

In the event that an applicant has been convicted of a crime, licensure may be denied. Investigation of the crime will determine the extent to which the crime is related to the qualifications, function and duties of the licensee.
